The Virginia Opossum is the only marsupial found in Connecticut and north of Mexico: any of a family (Didelphidae) of American marsupials that usually have a pointed snout and prehensile tail; especially : a common omnivorous largely nocturnal mammal (Didelphis virginiana) of North America that has grayish to blackish fur with white on the cheeks and is an expert climber
This Marsupial has been around since the dinosaurs, but have been in the northeast since the 1900's.They will live wherever food and water are available.h They have their babies in a pouch where they nurse them for a few weeks until they can come out and explore for themselves. The babies hold on to the mother to transport on her back
The Opossum is an opportunist animal and will look for food wherever it is available, Trash cans, dumpsters, gardens. They have a behavior like a rodent or Raccoon and will take up nesting anywhere there is a warm dry condition or whatever is suitable. I caught a mother and two babies that found their way into a garage through an overhang near the ground. They crawled in and found their way into the second garage at the ceiling level. Then they managed to track used motor oil all over the floor and up on shelving that showed me their activities. The more I investigated the funnier it got.
