The Coyote, (canis latrans), is found from Alaska to Central America. Originating in the western plains of the United States, the coyote lives almost throughout the US.
The coyote resembles a small German Shepard, but different than a dog. They are more slender, long narrow snout, wide pointed ears, thin legs, and small feet, with a bushy fox-like tail. The coat varies in color, from reddish, blonde, and charcoal, and grizzled-gray, with a cream or white belly. Most but not all have dark fur over it's back and a black tipped tail. They breed from January to March, with a gestation period of about 60-65 days, they have litters from 1 to 12 pups. The average is about 7 in CT. Both adults care for their young and will relocate them if they are disturbed. Packs break-up in late fall and early winter, the young move on, sometimes go long distances to find new territory.
S.M.L. Nuisance Wildlife may aquire a special permit needed for the control of this animal. If a specific threat is established toward supervised pets, penned livestock, poultry, crops, or a threat to public health and/or safety, this permit can be issued. Though, the mere presence of a coyote in your yard or near by is not enough to call it a nuisance problem. These animals, mostly nocturnal, maybe seen in the day like others, usually when raising young or get disturbed for their den. This does not mean they are rabid!
The coyote can carry the raccoon rabies virus, (though not common), also mange (a type of scabies), distemper, and other diseases when the population is more dense.

Please do not attempt to confront this animal on your own! This should only be done by an experianced NWCO.
